Voyager in Wonderland
by
Valerie Leoffler

Po’ktashium looked around Voyager. He smiled as he noticed the crewmen passing him, preparing to change
shifts. Of course, they couldn’t see his smile… they couldn’t see him. He had been visiting Voyager for a while,
hiding himself from their view so as not to interrupt their daily activities. He was curious about these creatures that
had entered his area of space. He had seen very few visitors in his region, and it seemed that those who did visit

were always out to conquer… not these people though. These Federations were interesting, wanting nothing more
then to go back to their region of space. Po’ktashium walked into the section of the ship designated "mess hall."

As he glided through the wall he caught a glimpse of the leader of these people, Captain Janeway, leaving. Coming
into the room, he noticed a young girl sitting by herself and decided to find out what she was working on. Advancing
to her position, Po’ktashium settled himself so he could see what she was reading.

Captain Kathryn Janeway walked onto the bridge, surveying her crew. It's been a good couple of days. The U.S.S.
Voyager had not even encountered so much as a stray asteroid. Her helm officer Tom Paris and Ops officer Harry
Kim came onto the bridge, discussing their latest "Captain Proton" adventure. Lieutenant Commander Tuvok, the
Vulcan security chief, was at his tactical station. Chakotay, her trusted first officer and good friend rose to greet
  her.

"Anything interesting happen?" Janeway asked, taking her seat.

"A little space dust and two class D planets," Chakotay informed his superior officer with a smile. "How's lunch?"

Leaning closer, Janeway chuckled softly and raised her eyebrows slightly. "Better than yesterday."

Chakotay smiled and stood up. "She's all yours, Captain." With that, the first officer retreated to lunch.

Neelix smiled as he looked around the mess hall. So far today Voyager had encountered no "first contacts," there
had been no power failures, and no one had complained about his cooking. Noticing his goddaughter Naomi sitting
across the room (and seeing that every thing was in order in his kitchen) Neelix walked over to her and tried to
  figure what she was reading.

"Hi Neelix," she said, placing the pad she was reading onto the table.

    " I… uh … didn't mean to interrupt."

"Oh, you're not interrupting. Mom wanted me to read an old classical favorite of hers. It's a story from Earth so …
I thought I might as well see what it's about," Naomi said, not sounding exactly thrilled.

"So, what's it about?" the curious Talaxian questioned.

"It's kind of strange. This girl named Alice follows a talking bunny down a hole."

    "That doesn't sound too bad."

"Naomi Wildman," sounded a voice from behind.

Naomi turned to see her friend Seven-of-Nine standing behind her.

"Were we not suppose to meet in astrometrics at thirteen-hundred hours?"

"Oops, sorry Seven. I was reading this story Mom wanted me to read."

"Alice in Wonderland," Seven read over Naomi's shoulder. "And what is the purpose of this story?"

"I think Mom wanted me to learn some about Earth's history through classical literature," Naomi commented to
    her friend.

Seven-of-Nine looked at her young protégé. "I see, however tardiness is an act of imperfection."

Naomi looked at her friend. "It won't happen again," she promised as she stood up. Taking the story with her,
  Naomi and Seven left.

Hmm… how interesting Po’ktashium thought aloud. Secretly accessing Voyager’s database, he discovered that a
story was a source of entertainment and almost a mental vacation for these people. Suddenly, he came up with an
idea. These people have been working hard and have not come close to causing a problem in my sector, I should
thank them before leaving. And what better way to do this then to give these people a little vacation.
He kept
  researching and formulating ideas.

"Captain, I'm reading what looks like a wormhole," Harry Kim read from his station.

Janeway stood. "Can we get a visual?"

Scrunching his forehead, the Ops officer replied that it was still out of range.

"Janeway to Seven-of-Nine, meet me in astrometrics."

Seven continued her work even as the captain summoned her. Since she was already in astrometrics, there was
no need to stop what she was doing until she found out what the captain required of her.

"Seven," Naomi commented, trying to catch her friend's attention. "There's something out there."

Seven looked up from her console and walked over to Naomi just as Captain Janeway arrived.

    "Captain?" Seven commented.

"Mr. Kim seems to have picked up what appears to be a wormhole just at sensor range."

"That's it!" Naomi stated excitedly. Both Seven-of-Nine and Janeway looked at the girl.

"What's it?" the captain patiently asked.

"That reading I was picking up. That was probably the wormhole."

   Janeway glanced at Seven.

"Naomi picked up a sensor reading of some kind right before you arrived. I have not yet had the chance to look at
it," the former Borg explained to her captain.

"I see. Well… I want the two of you to look into it," Janeway said, smiling at Naomi.

"Aye Captain," Seven replied. Naomi merely gave a nod in acknowledgment.

    "A wormhole?" Chakotay asked incredulously.

"A wormhole," Seven bluntly repeated. "And it appears to be fairly stable."

Kathryn Janeway glanced at her officers seated around the conference table. "Now the question is: What is our
next course of action? The wormhole is slightly out of the way and we have no idea what will happen if we get
   close."

The crew was silent, thinking. Janeway looked at each of her officers: Chakotay with his eyebrows creased, Tom
Paris and the chief engineer B'Elanna Torres thinking, probably pondering how the ship would react, Tuvok and
  Seven-of-Nine sitting motionless.

Finally, Harry Kim - who had been scanning the faces of his comrades - answered. "I think we should at least go
   in for a closer look."

Tom looked at his friend. "The problem is, I don't know how close we'll be able to get. According to Seven's most
recent report, it seems to be attracting space dust. It's getting so thick so quickly that we were lucky to have even
  seen it that last time."

Janeway turned to her chief engineer.

"Tom's right," B'Elanna started. "The dust is getting incredibly thick for some reason. The engines could probably
handle the stress of the wormhole, but if the dust keeps increasing at it's current rate, we won't be able to see ten
  kilometers in front of us."

"Can we enhance our sensors?" Janeway asked Torres.

"It's possible, but I don't know how much it would help in dust that thick."

"I think we should try it," Chakotay spoke up. "We could take it slow and if it gets to dense, we could turn
around, but we might be able to get some sensor readings from the wormhole. It could be our key home."

"Chakotay's right," Janeway commented, looking around. "We won't know unless we try and I would like to try
and see if there's a short cut home."

It was agreed and the crew of Voyager parted to carry out their tasks.

Time seemed to fly as Voyager approached the edge of the dust. As predicted, the fog of dust had become
incredibly dense, however B'Elanna had managed to boost the sensors enough to determine that there was only
dust between them and the wormhole.

"Can we send in a probe?" Janeway asked, not wanting to enter the dust until she knew more about the
    wormhole.

"We are too far away for a probe to be affective," Tuvok answered stoically.

Frowning, Janeway looked at Paris. "Take us in at one quarter impulse. Let's take this nice and slow."

Acknowledging the order, Tom entered the command and the Voyager crept toward the edge of the dust. With
ease, the Intrepid-class starship approached the cloud, however as soon as they were a few kilometers into the
dust storm, Voyager 's speed increased.

Janeway looked at Paris. "Tom, slow us down."

"I can't! We're being pulled in!" Tom exclaimed, frantically trying to regain control of the ship.

    "Full reverse!"

    "It's having no effect."

Voyager continued to be pulled and nothing the crew did could stop or even slow down the effect. It became
obvious that the wormhole had a sort of gravitational pull that was collecting the dust from near by star systems.
It continued to pull at Voyager until it finally disappeared into the depths of the wormhole.

"We've stopped," Tom Paris confirmed what the crew had guessed.

    "Damage report," Janeway declared.

Voyager had been on a very bumpy ride and she needed to know how her ship had handled the stress.

"Power failure on decks three, five, six, and eight. Repair crews are responding," Tuvok read from his console.

Janeway looked at the view screen, "Scan the area,"

Paris looked up from the helm to the captain. "According to these readings, we are right back where we started
from before we noticed the wormhole."

Janeway looked around, "Any ideas as to what is going on here?"

Silent, the bridge crew tried to come up with something, anything to report.

Naomi Wildman looked up from her reading when she heard a noise from across the room. Looking around, she
found the source of the noise: a little pet bunny.

"Computer, does anyone on Voyager own a rabbit?" she questioned.

    Negative.

Naomi went to catch the bunny and failed to do so as the animal quickly disappeared out the door and into the
   corridor.

Putting down the story, Naomi stood and shook her head. "I need a break," she muttered.

Leaving the story of Alice and Wonderland behind, Naomi walked out of her quarters and headed toward the mess
hall to pay Neelix a visit.

"Lieutenant, I have found something of interest," Seven-of-Nine said, coming up behind B'Elanna Torres. "Does
this belong to a member of your crew?" she asked, handing the chief engineer a top hat.

"A hat? Where did it come from?"

"I found it on the console near the door."

Taking the hat, B'Elanna exclaimed it and determined that it seemed very real indeed. She had only seen hats like
  that in the holodecks.

"I don't think so. Maybe someone will claim it later," she said, setting it aside as she returned to work.

Frustrated at the lack of answers Janeway retreated to her seat. As she was about to sit down, she caught a
glance of something on her chair. Turning to see what it was, Janeway noticed a half dozen roses. The peculiar
thing was the coloring. Two were white, three were red, and the other was a mixture of red and white. She glanced
at her first officer. Chakotay was studying the console at his side and seemed not to realize she was looking at
  him.

"Captain, we have an intruder," came a voice from the security station

Ignoring the flowers for the time being, Janeway glanced to where Tuvok was looking. Her brows creased as she
noticed a rabbit hiding behind the security station. Tuvok reached down and picked up the furry invader. Janeway
walked over. "Could this be the ‘friend’ we've been trying to contact?"

"Unknown," answered the Vulcan, examining the rabbit.

Coming eye to eye with the animal, Janeway decided she should attempt to communicate with it.

    "Can you understand me?"

The only response she received was a twitching from the nose.

    Sickbay to bridge.

"Bridge here, what is it doctor?"

I think you should come down here, Captain.

"On my way. Tuvok, you’re with me. And bring our guest. Chakotay," she started as she turned to her first officer.

In confusion, she noticed that the roses were gone.

    "Yes Captain?"

Shaking her head slightly, Janeway looked away from her seat and to Chakotay. "You have the bridge."

With that, Janeway indicated that Tuvok, still holding the bunny, follow her to find out what the doctor needed.

Rounding the corner to the mess hall, Naomi stumbled on something. Turning to see what it was, Naomi was very
surprised to see a hat. As she picked it up she heard laughter coming from the mess hall. Taking a breath, she
  entered.

Captain Janeway and Lieutenant Commander Tuvok entered sickbay and paused when they saw Neelix and the
  holographic doctor coming towards them.

Ignoring Neelix's curious glances at Tuvok's companion, Janeway glanced at the doctor. "What's the problem?"

"A visitor," the doctor simply replied, leading his comrades to his office. Crawling around on the desk was a cat.

"You're late," the feline told them. "You're late."

Janeway glanced at the cat. "I'm Kathryn Janeway. Who are you?"

"You're late," it said before vanishing.

Frustrated, Janeway looked at their other "visitor."

"Doctor, can you examine this bunny? I want to know everything about it."

The doctor took the rabbit and left, with Tuvok following in response to the Captain's silent order.

    "Janeway to bridge."

    Bridge here.

"Chakotay, scan for any life form that's not suppose to be here."

    Aye Captain.

"A hologram," came the doctor's voice from behind.

Janeway turned to look at the doctor.

As if to confirm the doctor’s diagnostic, the rabbit vanished just as the cat had.

Nothing. Naomi looked around. All the laughter had become quiet.

"Neelix? Hello? Anyone here?" Still holding the hat, Naomi glanced over the counter.

"Oh, I see you have my hat."

Naomi screamed and jumped. Turning, she saw a strange man behind her. "Who are you?"

"Now you’re being rude. First, you interrupt my party, scarring away my guests. Then, you take my hat, and
instead of saying ‘hi’ like a polite little girl should, you scream and demand answers. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I
have a party to get back to." With that he sat down at a table and the mysterious party resumed.

Holograms? Chakotay raised his eyebrows as the captain explained what had happened in sickbay. Things were
getting a little strange around here.

"I’m picking up a vessel," Paris reported from the helm.

    "Hail them."

    "No response."

    "Captain to the bridge"

Now what? Janeway wondered, sighing. "On my way."

With that, she and Tuvok retreated from sickbay, followed by Neelix who decided he had better get back to his
  mess hall.

Walking onto the bridge, Janeway noticed a thin rectangular ship with interesting shapes remarkably similar to
those found on a deck of cards. Looking toward her first officer, she asked if the other ship had made any contact.

    "Not yet."

Suddenly, the alien ship opened fire.

"Red Alert. Kim, open a channel," Janeway demanded over the noise.

    "Channel open."

"This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation starship Voyager. We intend you no harm. Please cease fire
or we will be forced to fire back."

Silence. Then, Kim announced, "We’re being hailed, audio only."

"Well, let’s hear it Mr. Kim."

"We apologize Captain, we thought you were someone else," came the voice and then, the ship was gone.

Janeway looked at where the ship had been just a few seconds ago in confusion and frustration.

Neelix was surprised when he heard noises coming from the mess hall. Entering, he was even more surprised at
  the state of it.

    "What is going on here?"

"Neelix, do you see them too?" Naomi asked, coming up to her friend and godfather.

"I see it, but what is it?"

"It’s a tea party, like out of my story. Look, there’s the Mad Hatter," she said, pointing to the man who had talked
to her earlier. "And I think that that is the March Hare," Naomi commented while pointing to a very large rabbit.

"Your story? Hmm, Naomi I think we may have found an answer. In your story is there a cat that is constantly
    saying ‘You’re late’?"

Thinking Naomi replied, "No, I don’t think so. There is a rabbit who walks around saying ‘I’m late’."

    "Uh, Neelix to Captain Janeway."

    What is it Neelix?

"I think I may know what’s going on here… or at least Naomi may have come up with an idea and I think it’s a
    good one."

I would love to hear it.

As Naomi and Neelix entered the bridge, Captain Janeway rose and indicated that they fallow her into her ready
room. Taking her seat she indicated that Naomi and Neelix should do likewise.

"Neelix tells me you think you know what’s going on," the captain said, looking at the girl.

"I’m not to sure what exactly is going on, but I think I know what the holograms are suppose to be. I think they’re
from a very old Earth classic called Alice in Wonderland," she said, trying not to show how nervous she felt.

She had worked with and talked to the captain before, but not in this kind of situation.

"Alice in Wonderland," Janeway thought aloud. "Hmmm… why would you say that?"

"I went into the mess hall and there was this tea party going on and a guy with a lot of hats and a large rabbit,
kind of like the tea party scene in my story. Then Neelix told me about the cat that kept saying ‘You’re late.’ And
I saw a bunny. In the story though, It’s the bunny that says something like that. He says ‘I’m late,’ not ‘You’re
    late’."

"Now the question is who made us Alice," the captain commented, leaning back in her chair. Smiling at Naomi,
the captain wondered something else. "How does Alice get out of this fantasy in your book?"

Looking down as if disappointed in her self, Naomi admitted to having not yet finished the story.

"That’s alright. We’ll figure it out. You’ve been a big help. Thank you," Janeway said.

She hadn’t intended to make Naomi feel bad because she hadn’t finished reading yet. She was very grateful for her
help. Janeway had never read that story because it was practically ancient, but she was glad someone still read
  those classics.

"Mom, I’m home!" Naomi said as she walked into her quarters.

"Hi honey, how was your day?" Ensign Samantha Wildman asked her daughter.

"It’s been interesting, I feel like I’m reliving Alice in Wonderland. I even got to tell some of the story to Captain
Janeway. She thinks it might be related to what’s going on on the ship."

Sitting down on the sofa, Naomi looked at her mother. "How does Alice get home?"

"She doesn’t really, she just wakes up."

"You mean it’s a dream? I don’t think the captain is going to be too happy about that."

"Why not?" Samantha asked, sitting down next to Naomi.

Sighing, Naomi looked at her. "Somehow everything that has been happening on the ship seems to be mimicking
Alice in Wonderland, and she was trying to figure out how to get out."

Naomi leaned back into the sofa discouraged and Samantha leaned over, kissed her forehead, and left for duty.

B’Elanna walked around the engine room, half-grumbling to herself. They had spent the morning repairing some
minor damage to the warp core and chasing holograms around engineering. This did not make her very happy. She
was used to order in her engineering room, not holographic rabbits, hats, or anything else for that manner.

All senior officers report to the briefing room in ten minutes Janeway’s voice announced over the intercom

B’Elanna looked at Seven. "I wonder what’s wrong now," Torres asked.

"We shall have to see," was Seven’s reply as the two headed out of engineering.

Captain Janeway looked at her officers, or at least those who were there. For some reason, Lieutenant Torres and
Seven-of-Nine had not yet arrived, which seemed incredibly strange, especially for Seven. Just as she was about to
ask the computer for their locations, the two tardy officers entered.

"Sorry we’re late. There was a slight malfunction on turbo lift one," B’Elanna commented, taking her seat.

Janeway looked at them. "Malfunction? What sort of malfunction?"

B’Elanna looked at Seven-of-Nine and took a breath. "We are not sure how, but for some reason, the door
   appeared to have shrank. "

"Shrank," Tom Paris asked, looking at the chief engineer. "How can a door just ‘shrink’?"

Momentarily ignoring the interesting ‘malfunction,’ Janeway proposed her theory.

"I had an interesting conversation with Naomi Wildman not to long ago and it appears that our holographic friends
seem to be paralleling a very old Earth classic called Alice in Wonderland."

"So someone’s turned the ship into a fairytale?" Chakotay questioned.

"Basically. We still don’t know why and we don’t know how."

   Janeway sat down in silence.

"What are you thinking?" Chakotay asked.

"Naomi Wildman was reading Alice in Wonderland," Janeway started. "Could it be possible that there is some
being in this area of space who for some reason decided to imitate the story on this ship?"

   Chakotay looked at her. "Why?"

After a brief pause, Tuvok proposed a possible answer. "It is quite possible that this may be some sort of test."

Janeway looked at her security chief. "Go on."

"Perhaps whoever it is that scanned us thought it might be interesting to see how we react to unusual situations."

Janeway looked around at the reactions of her officers. None of them liked to be tested anymore then she did.

"If that’s the case, I want to know who it is that’s testing us and why we are being tested."

Captain Janeway sat in her ready room, thinking. She didn’t like the idea that someone was using her as a test
subject. Interrupting her train of thought, the door chime chimed. "Come."

   Naomi walked in.

"Naomi, what can I do for you?"

"Well, I asked Mom how the story ends and she said that all that happens is that Alice wakes up."

    "Hmm… thanks Naomi."

"Sorry I didn’t have…" Naomi started, before vanishing from the room.

Janeway rose abruptly. "Red Alert," she bellowed, walking onto the bridge.

Chakotay looked at her and rose. Suddenly, a ship of elegance and grace that the other ship didn’t have appeared.

"Captain, we’re being hailed," Ensign Kim announced.

    "On screen."

"My name is Queen Hart and I want to know what you are doing in my kingdom!" came an authoritative voice from
someone who appeared, in all aspects, to be human.

"Who are you and why have you taken a member of our…"

"Enough!" Queen Hart bellowed, rising with the grace of an angry queen. "Leave or you will be punished!"

With that the transmission was cut short.

    "Get her back!" Janeway demanded.

Harry Kim worked on the request, but with little affect. The ship was physically still there, but it was as if they had
  no communications.

"Who’s missing?" Chakotay asked with concern.

    "Naomi Wildman."

    "Our ‘Alice’?"

"Looks like it," Janeway said, trying to control her anger and frustration. "I want a lock on that ship! Try to locate
Naomi Wildman and get her back."

Naomi looked in confusion at her surroundings. She appeared to be in a garden of some sort.

"Ah, I see my guest has arrived," came a voice from behind. Naomi turned and noticed a lady in an elegant gown
     coming toward her.

"Where am I? Who are you?"

"My child, you are a guest here and I expect you to act like one. My name is Queen Hart. I thought we might
     have a little visit."

"Where’s Voyager? You know, Captain Janeway doesn’t take kindly to the kidnapping of members of her crew."

"And you feel you are a part of her crew?" the queen questioned.

"I’m the Captain’s Assistant and I demand to know why I’m here."

"I have had enough of your rudeness young lady." Turning to her guards, she ordered "Off with her head!"

Po’ktashium looked around the bridge. This isn’t what he had planned for Voyager. They seemed more upset then
relaxed. Disturbed, he decided that he had better reveal himself and attempt to correct his errors.

"Intruder Alert!" Janeway shouted as the strange being appeared on her bridge. In a matter of a few seconds,
several officers had phasers out and aimed at the intruder.

"Please, I mean you no harm…" Po’ktashium said, raising his arms to show that he was unarmed.

"Who are you and what have you done with the member of my crew."

"Please, I will explain, but we need to get the girl back. She may be in danger."

"Captain, I have a lock on her!" Kim announced.

"Get her back," as Naomi appeared on the bridge, Janeway turned to her. "You ok?"

    "I’m fine Captain."

Janeway turned to the visitor. "I want some answers, and I want them now."

   Po’ktashium looked around.

"My name is Po’ktashium. I have been observing your crew for a while and I found the concept of reading stories
for relaxation intriguing. I merely meant to give you a ‘vacation’ from your busy life. Having never done anything of
this magnitude before, I was unaware of the consequences of my action. I apologize for the inconvenience."

"That’s it… ‘I apologize for the inconvenience’?" Janeway looked incredulously at him.

"That’s all I can do. Like I said, I’ve never done anything like this before and I don’t know how to stop the story.
I’m afraid you will have to finish the story."

Naomi looked at the stranger. "How? In the story, Alice simply wakes up?"

"I’m not sure myself." Po’ktashium felt bad for these people, but there was nothing he could do.

Janeway looked at him. "You’re not sure?"

"Like Naomi, I am also one of the younger members of my species. I set out on my own, wanting to explore. I
haven’t quite mastered all of my skills yet. Again I’m sorry, but you will have to figure out the rest of this yourself.
Good luck." And with that, Po’ktashium left.

Janeway looked around her stunned crew. Not quit sure what to do, she decided to try to figure out what exactly
had happened while getting under way home. "Tom resume a course for home."

Acknowledging her, Paris entered the commands into his panel. After a few seconds, Harry looked at the Captain.

"Uh… Captain, we aren’t going anywhere."

Janeway turned to the ops officer. "What do you mean? Tom?" Janeway asked, turning to the helm.

"I don’t get it. We should be heading home."

Chakotay looked to the captain. "We aren’t through with the story. We must still be in Wonderland."

   Janeway looked around. "Ideas?"

Naomi looked up at the captain. "In the story, Alice only has to wake up but maybe we have to leave back through
   the hole."

Thinking, Janeway turned to Harry. "Can you locate the wormhole?"

    "Negative."

   Sighing, Janeway sat down.

    "Wait…" Harry started. "There!"

The bridge crew looked to the viewscreen. Sure enough, there was the wormhole.

Standing, Janeway looked at the wormhole. "Tom set a course and take us in. Full impulse."

Holding her breath slightly, Janeway waited as Voyager re-entered the wormhole, hoping it was the right thing to
  do.

With ease, Voyager slid through what had been a bumpy ride before. Nothing happened. There was not so much
as a shutter. "All stop," Janeway said as soon as she though Voyager was at a safe distance. "Report."

"It’s the same as before," Tom said reading from his console. "According to my readings, we are right back where
    we started from."

"Tom, resume course for home, warp 5"

    "Aye Captain."

"Mr. Kim, status of our location?"

"We are heading toward the Alpha Quadrant."

Janeway smiled and looked at Naomi, who smiled back.

Neelix looked around his mess hall. There were no more tea parties and everything seemed to be back in order.
Just the way he liked it. Smiling, Neelix began to prepare dinner when Naomi walked in.

"Hi Neelix," she said, coming over to him.

"Well hello there Naomi. Uh, how’s your reading going?" Neelix wondered, leaving the cooking and sitting down at
a table. Naomi sat as well.

"I don’t know. It seems to be more interesting now that we got to play Alice. But mom told me how it ended,"
Naomi said, wearing a small smile.

"Ah, well… uh, when you finish, may I read it?"

"Sure. Anyway, I had better go. I’m meeting Seven and you know how she feels about tardiness. I just wanted to
drop by and say hi. And maybe get a sneak peak at dinner?"

headed toward astrometrics to meet her other friend and, hopefully, discover their next adventure.
